About The Author

Kate Burke has four generations of northern Victorian farming in her genes and a deep love for people. With 35 years’ experience in research, agronomy, commercial farm management, and strategic advisory, she knows the realities of modern farming inside out. For the past decade, through one-to-one and group work, she has helped families navigate the emotional, financial, relational, and strategic challenges of farm business, guiding them to make decisions that honour their land, values, and relationships. Living near the Murray River in Echuca, Victoria, Kate blends warmth, straight talk, and practical insight to help families move from tension and uncertainty to clarity and confidence.
Readers' Thoughts
Kate illustrates all of this (the key to excellent farming) with allusions to cricket and football, with easy-to-recall acronyms, with real-life case studies, and most of all with practical advice, all of which help to convey the importance of the choices that are open to farmers in the face of things they cannot control.
And that’s perhaps the most important message from this book: that being an ‘excellent farmer ’ is about making choices – choices about crops, about money, about people, and, ultimately, about themselves. Farmers, like people in other walks of life, don’t have to be excellent. But if they want to be, Kate’s book will show them how.
